01. Chassis and Suspension System

Suspension system is not chassis, which is a common mistake made by many people. The concept of chassis is larger than that of suspension, and it is a very complex geometry. The function of chassis is to install automobile engine, peripheral parts and assemblies to form the overall shape of automobile. It consists of four parts: transmission system, driving system, steering system and braking system.

Usually what we call suspension is only a part of chassis driving system (frame, axle, wheel, suspension).

02. Suspension and Suspension

Car owners'friends will find that some articles are called suspension while others are called suspension when they look up automobile information. So are there any differences between them?

In fact, suspension and suspension are the same thing, English is Suspension. But in the formal automobile textbooks of colleges and universities, they are called suspension, not suspension. We should respect the textbooks here. After all, they are the crystallization of the wisdom of many university professors. They are much smarter than those of us. In the following articles, I also use "suspension" instead of "suspension".

Overview of Suspension System

Suspension is the general name of all force transfer connection devices between frame (or load-bearing body) and axle (or wheel).

01. Function of Suspension

(1) The vertical, longitudinal and lateral forces acting on the wheels by the road surface and the moments caused by these forces are transmitted to the frame (or load-bearing body) to ensure the normal driving of the vehicle, i.e. to act as a force transfer.

(2) Elastic elements and shock absorbers are used to cushion and reduce vibration.

(3) Using some force transmission components of suspension to make the wheels jump relative to the frame or body according to a certain trajectory, that is to say, to play a guiding role.

(4) The lateral stabilizer of the auxiliary elastic element in the suspension is used to prevent the excessive lateral tilt of the body under steering and other driving conditions.

02. Composition of suspension

(1) Spring, an elastic element, acts as a buffer.

(2) Vibration absorber, which acts as a vibration absorber;

(3) Force transmission mechanism or guide mechanism, each connecting rod, plays the role of force transmission and guidance;

(4) Horizontal stabilizer - Horizontal stabilizer bar to prevent excessive roll of the body.

03. Natural Vibration Frequency of Suspension System

The frequency of suspension system is directly related to vehicle ride comfort. N-suspension frequency; M-spring mass; K-suspension stiffness; suspension frequency n varies with the change of spring mass. The most comfortable frequency range for human body is 1-1.6Hz. If the frequency of vehicle driving is kept within 1-1.6Hz, it is better to use variable stiffness suspension.
